Divorce and Protective Abuse Orders

If you are in the process of thinking about divorce or if you are going through a divorce and there is abuse involved, I’d like offer you some food for thought.

If you have obtained a PFA or Protection From Abuse order or any other kind of restraining order or protective order, you should not go anyplace near your husband or soon to be ex husband.  (Assuming that he is the abuser)

Here’s the thing. If you do, it will be presented to the court or the authorities that you are not afraid of him. If you were afraid, you wouldn’t have gone where you knew he would be. Depending on how the order is written, it could become invalid if you do.

Of course, if you need to come in contact with him, you can hire a constable or an off duty sheriff or policeman. One of the few reasons that you would need to go where he is might be to obtain clothing or other items.

The level of abuse that you are afraid of or have experienced will dictate the kind of assistance you should have with you.
