Stay At Home Moms, this post is mainly for you because your lives revolve around your children, your spouse and your house. You are the ones who often don’t have a lot of opportunity to be free of encumbrances in order to explore and learn about what is going on outside of your world.
So…that said, I want to give you Stay At Home Moms your own version of Preparing for Divorce 101.
Step One: Get a new email address with a different name and a different password. Google is very reliable so that would be my suggestion for your new email address. (Remember that you shouldn’t use your anniversary, kid’s birthdays, etc. for your password because your soon to be ex will be able to guess what it is.)
Step Two: Make sure you wipe out all cookies and history on your Mac or PC in case anyone wants to check out your online activities.
Step Three: If it is possible, get a post office box in only your name so that you can get mail that will remain totally private.
Step Four: Try to get a credit card or two in only your name.
Step Five: Start building up a nest egg. If it’s in cash, then make sure you have a safe place to put it e.g. a safety deposit box at a different bank than your family has used in the past.
Step Six: Get connected to the world outside. That means via the internet or any other way possible.
Step Seven: Learn about everything you can with regard to the local job market, divorce advice, support groups, attorneys, child care, etc.
There are so many places that offer a lot of good information and now you will have access to them because you have privacy. Your email is private. Your search history is private. Your postal mail is private. Your new credit cards are private. Your nest egg is private.
The world is yours and it is waiting for you. Take the first step and do what you need to do to gain the kind of knowledge and support you need.
Begin to focus on the you that you are deep down inside and try to remember the you that you used to be before you lost your identity.
If you need any help, just give me a call.
