If you are feeling down in the dumps because your marriage is over, try to understand that you are not alone in the process. There are so many people out there who can help you deal with your emotions and direction during this difficult time.
If you are experiencing depression, please seek professional help. There are many reasons why the experience of divorce is like the experience losing a loved one to death. That means that you need to allow yourself time to grieve and experience the different stages of grief.
Seven stages of grief
- Shock and Denial
- Pain and guilt
- Anger and bargaining
- Depression, reflection, loneliness
- Time of improvement
- Reconstruction and working through the process
- Acceptance and hope
There is absolutely nothing wrong and everything right with seeking a therapist during this difficult time. We have all heard that losing weight or stopping drinking or smoking is easier if we have the support of others. The same holds true with dealing with divorce. The kind of support that will help you is honest, caring and positive. If you are connected with people who are not helping your divorce mindset, temporarily free yourself from them. That might even include family members.
You need to be supported in ways that will help you, not hurt you. Seek help for yourself and your children and be patient. Divorce is a process and sometimes it is a lengthy process.
Wearing a pair of rose colored glasses won’t help your world but facing reality along with positive support will.
