Finding The Right Divorce Lawyer

weights 2

I just received two emails. One was from a woman who has finished the divorce process and is now dealing with the fallout. The other was from a woman who was in the middle of the divorce process when she lost her attorney. Very similar to what happened to me, she now needs to find a new attorney with just a month until her court date.

Please look at my previous post.

That will give you a lot of the important facts that you need to know when selecting a divorce attorney. Today’s post is a bit different. Sadly, it often happens that a woman might need to change divorce attorneys mid stream. Why? It can be for various reasons. Maybe you and your attorney are not getting along. Maybe your attorney is not returning your calls in a timely fashion. Maybe your husband’s attorney is demolishing your attorney and you. Maybe your gut just tells you that you must change.

For whatever reason you must make a change, please think about the plus and the minus. The minus is that changing attorneys will cost money because the new attorney will need to spend billable hours catching up on your case. Here’s the good news. Now that you have experienced what his attorney is capable of doing and his or her reputation, you are ahead of the game when you select your new attorney.

Why? It is because you can do some homework and find a new attorney who is better than your husband’s. Cross your T’s and dot your I’s.

A good place to find information in my opinion is Nolo’s Lawyer Directory. Nolo confirms that each attorney listed has a valid license and is in good standing with the American Bar Association. It offers profiles for each attorney. You will see information about each attorney which will include experience, education, fees and philosophy. This does not mean that a good attorney has to be in Nolo’s directory but it will give you a starting place for your research. You may also check out the links on my site for information.
