During my divorce coaching sessions, the question is often asked, “How do I know if I should see a psychologist or if my kids should?”
The answer is not a difficult one to answer but you must understand the difference between sadness and depression. Divorce is a sad time for all involved including the children however, there is a difference between being sad and being depressed.
I tell moms that if either they or their children are depressed and begin to withdraw from daily activities and life, a psychologist might be necessary. There may be signs such as a loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, prolonged episodes of crying. Simple pleasures are no longer enjoyed.
If the depression is ongoing e.g. more than a week, some type of intervention might be needed.
