Divorce and Pets

This is the first post I have made on this subject and I am quite surprised that no one has brought it to my attention previously. It’s about pets and divorce.

Chattel is the legal term for pets. The Encarta English Dictionary defines chattel as “an item of personal property that is not freehold land and is not intangible. Chattels are typically movable property chattels personal, e.g. furniture or cars, but may also be interests in property chattels real, e.g. leases.”

For those of us who are animal lovers, this is pretty hard to take. How can courts consider these pets that we love so much personal property? After all, they offer us so much unconditional love? If you have a huge bond with your pet, losing him or her might devastate you.

Hopefully, your soon to be ex will want to do what is best for the pet just like hopefully he will want to do what is best for the children.

This is the harsh reality so if you don’t want to lose Fido or Sylvester, once again you need to get prepared for what might follow by doing your homework and learning about the law and how you might be able to stack the deck in your favor in order to keep your pet.
