Many of you are considering filing for divorce after the holidays. There is one thing that I can’t emphasize enough to you and that is to be extremely cautious when you select your divorce attorney.
I want to give you an example of how easy it is for vulnerable women to get caught up in issues that have no bearing on the outcome of their divorces. There are many unethical attorneys out there who play on the emotions of vulnerable and fearful women.
This is a true story.
A woman finds out that her husband is filing for divorce and she panics because she is not prepared in any way. A friend tells her about a “great attorney” who will represent her and always wins in court.
She goes to meet him and he “sells” her on his services. He begins to ask her questions regarding her marriage. She tells him that she had never “played around” and that she knew her husband had been unfaithful for many years.
The attorney tells her that her husband was probably taping her phone calls and that anything she said on the phone or in the house was probably being recorded.
He advises her that she could do nothing that might indicate there were any relationships with any men or women in her life.
She is shocked and tells him again that she had not had nor would she have relations with any men because she took her marital vows to heart and would never break them. She didn’t have a clue as to what he was talking about when he mentioned other women.
Here is the frightening part about what I just described. This woman and her husband lived in a no fault divorce state.
All this attorney did to her was to scare her into being fearful that her conversations were being recorded even though she had done nothing that could be used against her.
Even if she had, it would have had no bearing because she and her husband lived in a no fault divorce state.
This woman ended up paying over $15,000.00 in attorney fees for services that were totally unnecessary. They had no bearing on her divorce because she lived in a no fault divorce state.
Scary? You bet it is!
