When you are writing a resume, self confidence plays a role. Your accomplishments tell a potential boss that you are capable or incapable.
So what if you have been out of the job market for a while because of either being a stay at home mom or because you were laid off or your position was terminated?
The old saying, “It’s easier to get a job when you have a job” is so very true. So how do you handle those gaps in your resume? And how do you handle jobs that you had that weren’t very impressive? Sadly in the work place, one of these jobs is a stay at home mom.
Handle both with a positive statement that indicates your accomplishments and results. See my blog post on Gaps In Your Resume.
The key is to present all information accurately and honestly but with confidence. It’s so very important to have a “WOW” factor on your resume. It’s also important to avoid using descriptions that will mean absolutely nothing to the person who might be hiring you. Do not do anything “cutesy” such as the picture on this post. Use plain paper and write a cover letter.
Three things that will create a WOW on your resume:
- The challenge for each job you held
- Your accomplishments for each job held
- The results of your accomplishments on the job and how they benefited your employer
With so many people looking for jobs, it is extremely important to tailor your resume to the position for which you are applying. Your resume will give the reader an idea of whether or not you will be a team player. It will give an indication of whether or not your attitude and work ethic will be an asset to the employer.
