So many times, women get hit with legal fees that they hadn’t counted on because they weren’t prepared. I can’t emphasize enough the fact that detailed preparation saves money during the divorce process.
The reason is simple. If a question, accusation or investigation comes from the other side, you are immediately prepared for a retort.
This will save your having to pay for billable hours because you have already done the work that otherwise your attorney might have had to do. You can immediately offer the proof necessary and avoid wasted time and money.
What can you do to save legal fees?
1. Copy all important documents including credit cards, frequent flier miles, hotel miles, medical information, bank statements and anything else that might be pertinent in the case of divorce. These should include marital assets and liabilities.
2. Take photos of the contents of your home. If there were gifts pictured in the photos, note who gifted them to whom and when. If you have proof as to the value, that will help.
3. Keep a journal that notes events and times that might be pertinent. Keep a separate file of emails that offers proof of conversations between you and your spouse.
4. Prepare an income and expense statement that includes the figures for you and each of your children.
5. Research divorce laws in your state. That way you will have a better idea of the facts and won’t waste money on unnecessary legal fees.
Sure it is possible that you might not need all of this – but if you do – you might have saved yourself hundreds or thousands of dollars by being prepared!
