Revealed: Do You Need A Forensic Accountant?

Divorce comes in to play in all walks of life and with all income levels. If you and your spouse do not have complicated income and asset issues, this post probably will not be of interest to you.

If your financial situation is more complex than most and there are monetary questions that need to be addressed, hiring a forensic accountant might be appropriate for you.

The DOS or date of separation plays a role in the findings of a forensic accountant.

By definition, “forensic” means “suitable for use in a court of law.”  So, in essence, a forensic accountant, forensic auditor or investigative auditor has the job of investigating the financial figures and recording them so that he or she can serve as an expert witness in divorce court.

Most of the large and medium sized accounting firms have forensic accounting departments. These departments specialize in specific areas that pertain to divorce.

Forensic accountants can play a significant role in divorce because of their ability to analyze the income and assets that ultimately become the foundation for spousal support, child support, equitable distribution and alimony.
