Divorce was complicated before technology became so much a part of our lives. Now, it seems as though complicated has become an understatement. Technology adds danger to the scenario.
Several of my newest clients are dealing with the wrath of soon to be ex-spouses who have used technology in their divorce strategies.
Without going into the details, I would like to give you a few warnings. Almost all new PCs have webcams attached. It is very easy for hackers, more correctly called crackers, to take control of your computer.
If you are a person who opens mail from anyone and everyone, you are at risk. Even if you are careful, you are still at risk. If your spouse is computer savvy, you are at risk. Even if he isn’t computer savvy, you are still at risk. If you use Facebook and make new friends there, you are at risk.
The technology is such that your computer can be used as a spy or Peeping Tom. This can make you extremely vulnerable.
There are a few steps you can take to protect your privacy.
- Disable the webcam if you are computer savvy or cover the lens with electrical tape if you are not.
- Make sure your fire walls and antivirus programs are up to date. Run scans if necessary.
- Turn off your computer when you aren’t using it.
- Don’t do anything in front of the camera that you wouldn’t want the whole world to see.
- Warn your kids about the dangers of webcams.
There is so much more to cover, but this will do it for today’s post.
