The Essence of Heart

The Long Road

I have been asked so often, what my favorite cause is, and I have a difficult time answering because I have so many favorite causes. After all, there are so many people and animals out there who need help in countless ways.  So,  having said that, I guess  my favorite causes are those that direct their attention  to people, particularly children and animals as they deal with hardships. All of us have difficult roads in our lives. As all of us know, some of us have more of an uphill climb than others. There will be good days and bad days for everyone. Who needs help the most? I don’t think that anyone of us has the answer to that question.

As I try to think about my favorite cause, it’s kind of like figuring out my favorite food. If I eat something wonderful, that becomes my preference. I’ll savor that food until the next delicious masterpiece crosses my lips. Then after I eat the new mouth watering delectable, I find myself in a quandary.  It’s not that I am indecisive, quite the contrary. It’s just that my mind seems to value the newest taste most. I must add that often, one of the prior tastes tends to return to seize its prior place of honor.  Usually the returning entity has chocolate in its name.

So back to the question; “What is my favorite cause?” Well, since my friend Rugby Jones had his accident, we found a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in this wonderful world of ours. Rugby had hit an all time low and so did I, when I had to accept the fact that he could no longer walk. This cocky, fun loving, playful, inquisitive and loyal little friend of mine exemplified how to bite off more than you can chew and then spit it out. Why? Because he understands and exemplifies the fact that misfortune can be a precious gift. Rugby Jones turned being at the end of his rope, or leash in his case, into a life like Doug Firebaugh described, “You can do anything in life you set your mind to, provided it is powered by your heart.” Rugby positive attitude toward life and overcoming obstacles is derived from the very essence of heart!

So back to the reason for this blog, I will gravitate toward any cause that will help children of all ages to understand that the main ingredient in the recipe of contented and successful living is: believing. Without that ingredient, there is no hope of making lemonade out of lemons. After all, we know that Ralph Waldo Emerson was brilliant and we need to remember his sagacious words, “Beware what you set your heart upon. For it shall surely be yours.”

My friends please give me the names of the causes in which you are dedicated to making a difference. Rugby Jones and I will be donating a portion of the profits of The Tail Of Rugby Jones which will be out the end of June, to worthy charities and we will be most grateful for your input. We want to narrow the quest down to charities that help children of all ages to overcome any “different-ness” that they have and take pride in who they are and what they can do. That will cover physical issues, mental issues, obese issues, vision, hearing and speech issues as well as many issues caused at birth not to mention various diseases. Oh, and Rugby Just reminded me that we will also be donating to a charity that helps animals in some way.
