“The Only Way They Can Come Back Is If They Go…”

As we are all awaiting the arrival of the New Year, many of us are feeling alone and afraid because of the ravages that divorce has played on us and on our families and children.

As mothers, we don’t understand how the children can ever question our love or loyalty to them. We remember sleepless nights caring for and worrying about our children. We know only too well that our children were and are the meaning of being a mother.

Those of you, who know me, know that I love country music. I am thinking about a song that Cal Smith sang and I will tell you, it hits home for many of us! Divorce shatters a family and all too often, one or both parents work at alienating the children from the other parent. One or both parents contrive stories that will make the children turn on the other parent.

Children who are used as weapons to hurt the other parent are often hurt far more than the parent that is the target. I have experienced the hurt of being the parent that was used as the target and I will tell you that the pain has been brutal. However, just like anything else in this life, there is usually a rainbow after the rain. I would like to share the lyrics of this song in hopes that those of you, who have felt the devastation of your children turning against you, might see a glimmer of hope. The song is titled, Birds and Children Fly Away.

Mama gently smiled and told me that, Mamas always know the only way to come back is to go – and birds and children fly away like clouds on a windy day – and there’s usually a rainbow after the rain. Birds and children fly away. That’s the Master’s plan, you know. Children are God’s gift to make love grow. I can still hear Papa say, Don’t cry Mama, birds and children they just fly away.

Does that hit a nerve? It sure hit mine but guess what? After living through seven years of the divorce process, I am seeing their return. Birds and children fly away…The only way to come back is to go.

Ladies, it does get better and you will be happy again and if you have patience, you will be surprised how wonderful things will be when they return. Trust me! It will be worth the wait.
