A Life’s Lesson

As the end of 2007 approaches, I am reminded that life is a journey. I know that I have grown in more ways than one. Each day and each moment has had a lesson to offer to any of us who is willing to listen. Worrying doesn’t accomplish anything.

I have come to the understanding that God has a wonderful sense of humor and his timing is obviously, perfect.

As a new mother, I worried that my dog might bite my son. It never happened. What happened was that my son bit my dog. That was the year that I learned the seriousness of a child’s biting a dog. (The dog required special shots because of the son bite.)

One of my first Christmases with children, I was concerned that one of my special ornaments might get broken. That year, I learned that a broken ornament wasn’t a big deal because my son and a different dog, managed to pull the entire tree down on top of them. Almost every ornament broke. Somehow the concern, of one broken ornament evaporated.

Another year, I was concerned about not having enough money to spend on presents for my family. That was the Christmas that I found out that my 96 year old father was literally, flushing hundreds of dollars down the toilet! My understanding of that fact came as I noticed several drenched twenties that didn’t quite make it all the way out of the bowl!

The same year, I learned that my concern about keeping a pet lizard warm enough, ended up with my frying him on a heating pad.

I guess one of God’s most poignant lessons was the one that he offered following my concern about a friend’s finances. She was dealing with huge financial problems after the death of her father. I worried that she wouldn’t be able to survive because as hard as she tried, she couldn’t get a job.

God’s punch line came years later when this same friend ended up loaning me a tremendous amount of money for my attorney’s retainer, food for my children and animals, vet bills, electric, water, etc. “Aye, there’s the rub”  and the punch line and the lesson.

So my friends, please in 2008, do not waste time worrying because it will do no good and it may even cause you to become the brunt of a very loving joke and a very valuable lesson!
