There are a few things that should go without saying but I find that I do need to say them. The divorce process can be complicated and costly. There are a few traps that many of my clients fell into prior to our talking.
Don’t be taken in by thinking that your spouse will pay your legal fees. Sure it’s possible but it isn’t probable. I can’t emphasize enough that you must stay on top of your legal fees. One of the divorce lawyer’s comments that I detest the most is, “Don’t worry about paying me. Your husband will be paying my bills.”
Don’t believe it. Do worry and do stay on top of your legal fees.
Three steps to a cheaper divorce
- The longer the divorce process takes, the more it costs. Do the best you can to make things happen as quickly as possible.
- Utilize your attorney’s paralegal as much as possible and be aware of the fee that is charged when the paralegal does the work.
- Do your own research. Dig as deep as you can. Don’t pay someone to do what you can do without charge.
No matter how much or how little money you have, please take head. Your ability to survive financially depends on your ability to save money during the divorce process.
