Please don’t get so caught up in trying to “get back” at your soon to be ex-spouse in divorce court that you lose perspective. You must focus on the whole picture! Even if he was unfaithful or abusive, keep your perspective.
Think about it this way:
Let’s say you have $500,000.00 in assets. You have been married 15 years and have 2 children. You live in a no fault state.
Your attorney tells you that you should go all the way to divorce court because:
- You don’t deserve to lose your money.
- You need to fight back.
- The judge will see that you were wronged.
Your attorney’s fee is $250.00 per hour. So far, your legal fees have been okay. You are angry and you are hurt so you think, why not?
This is the reason, why not? The minute or more appropriately the second you prepare to go to court, your assets go out the window. All of the promises made to you by your attorney mean nothing. If your divorce lawyer tells you not to worry about legal fees…worry!
No matter who pays the legal fees…and probably you will, the money comes out of the “asset kitty.”
So, you do the numbers. If you do not go to court, it will cost less. If you do go to court, it will cost more. You need to keep your perspective and decide if it is worth it.
In my expert opinion, avoid divorce court if there is any way possible!
