Everyone has heard the term amicable divorce but does everyone really understand what it means? By definition, amicable means friendly, polite, good-humored, kind, good natured or harmonious.
In the very best of cases, the couple getting divorced can remain polite and friendly. I’m not sure about the other adjectives. When children and assets do not play a role, an amicable divorce is more likely to be a reality.
The issue is that most divorcing spouses are involved in some level of conflict or they would not be headed for divorce.
When conflict is part of the process, the divorcing spouses need to find solutions to reduce conflict. That means that they need to end the cycle of conflict. The only way that this is possible is when the parties quell the anger and resentment within themselves.
A divorce decree will not stop the war. Quite the contrary, the tension will be resolved only when the parties let go of the past and allow themselves to move on to a life after the end of their marriage.
