Divorce and Stay At Home Moms

My last post mentioned gaps in resumes and I have received quite a few emails from women who believe that the only things they know how to do are related to being a wife and mother. For those of you who are thinking the same thing, I have a suggestion for you.

Begin to put together a resume and focus on your accomplishments. Then think about including the areas that you have become proficient in as a stay at home mom. The biggest mistake you can make is to think that your proficiencies are all related to being a wife and mother.

Change the way you are approaching your resume.

Think about things like the following:

  • You are on the internet now. Therefore you have some computer skills.
  • You probably put a search word or words on Google and landed here.  Therefore you have some knowledge about how search engines work.
  • You probably have an email address and connect on some social media sites. Therefore you have some knowledge of social media.

You take it from there. You may not keep everything you write down as you brainstorm but everything you write down can lead to something that you will want on your final resume. The other important thing to remember is that you can become proficient in various things as a stay at home mom. Go online and see what kinds of things are available to you.

Do yourself a favor by getting started now. If you know of a stay at home mom who might be facing divorce and you care about her, share my suggestion. Preparation is the key to success.
