So, there are only “two more go to sleeps and two more wake ups” until the holidays have come to an end…this time.
You can cut the tension with a knife. You and your husband have tried to be civil for the sake of the kids and the family and friends but your stress level is off the Richter scale.
There are a few things you need to remember. If you are thinking about divorce, probably you spouse is too. In fact, your spouse may already have had an appointment or appointments with potential attorneys.
You have already checked around and there are two excellent family law attorneys in town but they are both very expensive and you are sure that neither you nor your spouse can afford to retain either of them. At least that is what you are assuming.
Here is a very important fact that you need to understand. If your spouse has a consultation with an attorney about your potential divorce and doesn’t hire that attorney, you can’t hire that attorney either.
Why, because that would be a conflict of interest. So as I have mentioned before, it is crucial that you do your homework and begin to research and make appointments to consult with various attorneys as soon as possible for several reasons.
Obviously, one reason is so that you can find the attorney who is just the right fit for you. The other reason is so that you will be in the driver’s seat as far as eliminating the attorneys who are not the right fit rather than having them advise you that you can’t retain them because your husband has already had a consultation with them.
Remember also that many attorneys will waive that initial consultation fee if you retain them or they will apply that consultation fee toward their fees if you do retain them.
