Did you see this or hear about it in the news? It is such a sad story. That such a thing could happen in the great country of ours is hard to believe.
A 58 year old woman who had worked for the same company for over 25 years was laid off. Her case is especially sad because she never missed a day of work. She was a loyal team member who consistently put the company’s needs before her own. According to the news, she never hesitated to stay late or come in early to work. She never demanded a raise or more benefits or perks.
She was quoted in today’s news as saying, “I just don’t understand why they let me go. I loved my job and worked hard. I was a team player and I always made the best out of difficult situations. I don’t know what I’m going to do or where I’ll go. Now I have no health insurance, no pay check, no retirement benefits. I’m not old enough to get Social Security and from what I hear, there won’t be any Social Security when I do turn 65. I just never expected this to happen to me after all these years.”
Because of some government red tape glitch, she can’t collect unemployment. She has done all she can to find a job but her employer of over 25 years hasn’t offered to give her a positive letter of recommendation as of yet. Her nonexistent income places her on the poverty level but she can’t get food stamps to help feed her in her hour of need.
This story is so heart wrenching and thousands of the people who have heard her sad story are up in arms. They are using social media like Facebook and Twitter to get the word out. They are contacting everyone they know who might be able to help her because of the unfair way she has been treated. They are calling and writing their congressmen and state senators. Some have even tried to contact the White House. There are petitions being passed around in an effort to get her some help. These caring people are trying to help her find a job that she is qualified to do. Some people are even reaching into their own pockets to help her.
Oh…wait! No they aren’t! She worked for her husband and her job was taking care of her family as a stay at home mom for over twenty five years. Nobody cares about her plight. Why should they? After all, why should they help her now when she wasn’t smart enough to plan for her own future?
